“It’s hard to believe that a small regional newspaper from a small country like Norway could win the most prestigious prize in competition with media companies from around the world. But the team at Bergens Tidende never fails to impress me with their achievements. In 2022, they won several national awards, and now they have also gained international recognition. I am incredibly proud,” says Siv Juvik Tveitnes, EVP of Schibsted News Media.

The INMA Global Media Awards took place at the Harvard Club in New York City Friday night. The ceremony celebrated innovation and best practices across 20 categories, including media features, subscriptions, advertising, data and insights, product development, and newsroom innovation. Supported by the Google News Initiative, the event showcased the exceptional talent and ingenuity within the industry.

Bergens Tidende’s “Journey Around the World” captivated the judges with its inventive storytelling format, allowing users to embark on a visually immersive global expedition. The campaign was hailed as a world-class execution, offering a remarkable adventure with unparalleled user engagement.

Schibsted gets extraordinary award

INMA judges also decided to give out a special award based on overall excellence in experimentation, innovation, and execution across multiple categories.

The “Special Jury Distinction” award was given to Schibsted, Aftenposten, Bergens Tidende, and VG for their exceptional use of technology, coupled with outstanding multimedia narratives and remarkable journalism.

“This is a clear testament to the fact that Schibsted’s media houses are at the forefront in numerous areas, not only in our domestic markets but also globally. I hope this accolade will inject further energy into the entire News Media, enabling us to continue making our mark also on the international stage,” says Tveitnes.

Fierce competition

Since 1937, the INMA competition has recognized media excellence, evaluating news media companies in both national and regional segments. Here, both VG, Bergens Tidende, and Aftenposten received four awards.

In total, the 2023 Global Media Awards attracted a staggering 775 entries from 239 prominent news media brands spanning 40 countries. Participants represented a wide range of media platforms, including newspapers, magazines, digital media, television, and radio.

A distinguished panel of 54 media executives from 19 countries carefully assessed the submissions earlier this year to select 198 finalists. Here you will find an overview of all the winners.
