Schibsted at JavaZone 2022

Finally we got to experience a full size, live version of JavaZone in Oslo Spektrum once again! They say that if you wait for something, it is usually worth waiting for. And we couldn’t agree more.

Schibsted is a proud partner to JavaZone, the biggest developer conference in Norway, and it was a joy to meet so many engaged people and listen to a variety of truly inspiring talks. We also had some of our own stars speaking on stage!

Open source – how to unveil its potential in large enterprises

Most people don’t realise how much we rely on free and open source software in our daily lives. Linux powers over 3 billion phones as well as the majority of all servers. Apache and Nginx run over 60% of the world’s websites, and a lot of infrastructure solutions like Kubernetes are also open source.

Johannes Gorset and Zuzanna Zygadlo-Stenberg took the audience through a journey of how Schibsted has created its open source strategy. Even though through the years, Schibsted has released several open source projects that are used by people and companies around the world, we would like to do more. We believe that both Schibsted and other companies have more software that can be useful to others and should be open sourced. This talk gave all listeners some practical tips on how to go about it and where to start.

Lotte Johansen, Engineering Manager at FINN.no, shared the journey of a new application from a proof of concept –  to a scalable marketplace platform built on FINN’s micro frontend architecture.

Lastly, we hope you had the chance to stop by our stand!

Part of the Schibsted booth crew was Sergio Prin-Sand, Oleg Ievtushok, Martine Vatle, Clayton Don Corda and Magdalini Fotiadou. We had a little after-conference-chat with them:

Why is it important to be present at JavaZone?
Schibsted is heavily invested in product and tech and JavaZone is an important arena in the industry. As JavaZone is one of the biggest tech events in Oslo, it provides a platform for us to meet potential candidates and showcase our brand.

What was the highlight of the conference?
One of the biggest highlights was seeing how well known our family of brands is, leading to meaningful discussions and learning about the market and our competitors. Another highlight was the risotto, of course.

What was the best question you got?
What is Schibsted doing to attract young talent? What is Schibsted doing from a sustainability point of view?
