News about tech and start-ups
At Shifter we follow the innovative business world through thick and thin and aim to bring the news, analyses, stories, debates and knowledge from the new business world to the general public. Shifter Media is a media house with two publications: Shifter.no is an online newspaper that covers news about tech start-ups in Norway and BankShift covers news from the banking and finance businesses.
Facts and figures
Established in 2016
Shifter was established in 2016 by the ex-Schibsted journalists Per-Ivar Nikolaisen and Lucas Weldeghebriel. They used to work together in the news department of Aftenposten in the early 2000s.
14 employees
Shifter has grown from two to 14 employees, of which 85 percent are editorial. A planned strengthening of the commercial team will bring the number of employees to 15 during the summer of 2024.
100,000 monthly readers
At the time Shifter was established, the general interest in start-ups and ventures was low. Today we have readers both among start-ups and investors and increasingly also from the established business community.
New site – BankShift
Schibsted as an owner has enabled investments in new areas. In November 2023 Shifter Media launched BankShift as a site for the banks and finance segment. The site has been received well by the market and in April 2024 it also launched its first event.
Combining technologies
Shifter has been developed with standard technologies, and in fact started as a Wordpress blog for 49 dollars. While it has not been a goal in itself, we think that our journalism is the most important and that it should be possible to combine different standard technologies to be able to publish our news.
Schibsted invested in 2023
Schibsted Media bought 51% of the shares in Shifter in April 2023 with an option to buy the rest of the company at a later stage. This opened up for synergies within areas such as ads, events and subscriptions.
